You don’t need to know how to code to join an AI hackathon. In fact, you don’t even need to know where to start.

Women Applying AI co-founders Luda Kopeikina and Pam Boiros joined Episode 28 of Womansplaining AI, “You Can Come to the Hackathon Clueless,” to discuss why getting started matters more than having all the answers.

Listen to the episode here.

The conversation explores how the organization Women Applying AI began with a question the founders kept hearing from women: How do I learn AI?

What You’ll Learn from This Episode

How Women Applying AI Got Started: The question that inspired Luda and Pam to create a community focused on helping women learn and apply AI. Luda and Pam explain Women Applying AI focuses on embracing opportunity rather than focusing on gender gap, and why “applying” is the most important word in the organization’s name Women Applying AI.

How AI Hackathons Work: Participants with technical and non-technical backgrounds collaborate to solve real-world problems, and coding experience isn’t a pre-requisite. This effectively demystifies AI hackathons, showing how people with different skills across sectors can work together on real-world problems, even without previous coding background.

How Beginners Can Build AI Skills: Hands-on experimentation helps participants progress from exploring AI tools to building their own creative, practical projects. They share how members build confidence through hands-on learnings, from experimenting with their first AI tools to creating applications of their own.

Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Start Learning AI: Luda and Pam encourage women to experiment with AI now rather than waiting for the technology to stop evolving. Both founders were asked for one thing listeners should do today. Both agreed on the same thing: get your hands on the keyboard. Pam says: “I talk to too many people who are like, waiting for the dust to settle on models. The dust is not gonna settle. It’s never gonna settle.”
